You will fly from Johannesburgs OR Tambo International Airport to Cairo dinner is served on the flight.
You arrive at Cairo International Airport in the early morning where you will be met by a representative of our Cairo agent who will assist you with your luggage and transfer you to the 5 star
Mercure Cairo Le Sphinx Hotel, or similar, situated close to the pyramids, or similar, where you are booked on a bed & breakfast basis. You will have your room on early morning arrival and can take breakfast.
After time to relax and refresh, you will enjoy a half day tour visiting Old Cairo and the Citadel overlooking the city, the Mohammed Aly Alabaster Mosque, and in Old Cairo you visit the Coptic St Sergius Church and the Hanging Church, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and the famous medieval Khan el Khalili Bazaar. Overnight Cairo.
Today there is a full day tour visiting the Giza Pyramids to see the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx and Valley Temple and later you visit Memphis, the ancient capital, where the fallen colossus of Ramesses II can be seen and other ancient sculpture. Afterwards you move on to the vast funerary complex of 3rd Dynasty King Djoser in the desert at Saqqara with the Step Pyramid, the first ever pyramid (c. 2600 BCE). Lunch is included at a local restaurant. Overnight Cairo.
This morning there is a guided tour of the world-renowned Egyptian Museum with the astonishing gold treasures of the boy-king Tutankhamun and an antiquities collection spanning 5,000 years. The afternoon is at leisure. Overnight Cairo.
After breakfast you check out of the hotel and will be transferred to Cairo Airport for the short flight to Luxor.
On arrival at Luxor Airport you will be met by our local agent and transferred to your luxury 5-star de luxe Nile cruiser M/S Tower Prestige, or similar, for the 4-night Nile cruise, during which you will enjoy full board. Today there will be a tour of Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex in the world with its forest of pillars, sacred lake, obelisks and massive reliefs and you will also visit the majestic riverside Luxor Temple.
After breakfast you cross the Nile by road to the West Bank to visit the tombs of the pharaohs in the famous Valley of the Kings and you also visit the great terraced temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri and the Colossi of Memnon giant statues of Amenhotep III.
Today your Nile cruiser will sail to Esna, where it will pass through the lock and continue sailing south to the dusty town of Edfu where you visit the huge Temple of Horus at Edfu by horse carriage from the ship - this is the most complete temple of the ancient world. During the cruise there is likely to be a traditional gallabiya party when everyone dresses Egyptian-style. Items can be bought inexpensively in the bazaars and sometimes hired on the boat.
Enjoy breakfast as your cruiser continues sailing southwards to Kom Ombo where you visit the riverside temple with its dual dedication to the crocodile god Sobek and a falcon-headed god Ra-Haroeris. Your cruise ship sails to the picturesque town of Aswan. Overnight Aswan.
Following breakfast, you travel by road to see the Aswan High Dam, which forms the 500km long Lake Nasser and visit the ancient granite quarry with its 1,000 ton Unfinished Obelisk. Afterwards, you take a motor-boat to the elegant island Temple of Philae dedicated to the supreme maternal goddess Isis. This evening there is the opportunity to experience the colourful souk (market) which runs the length of Aswan. Overnight Aswan.
After breakfast you disembark from the Nile cruiser and will be transferred to Aswan Daraw Airport for the flight to Cairo International Airport connecting with the flight to Amman, Jordan where you will be met and assisted by our agent to transfer to 4 star Zamzam Towers or Arena Space, or similar - overnight on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis.
After breakfast, you will travel along the Kings Highway, the ancient Silk Road, on a full day tour visiting Mount Nebo, the mountain top memorial of Moses with its spectacular view of the Holy Land, overlooking the Jordan Valley and said to be the site of the prophets death and burial place. You also stop in Madaba, home of the most famous Byzantine mosaics and the 6th century map of the holy places in the biblical world. There will be a visit to the the 12th century Crusader Karak Castle and the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. As the name suggests, the sea is devoid of life due to an extremely high content of salts and minerals. You continue to Petra where you check in at 4 star Petra Panorama or Golden Tulip Hotel, or similar, on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis. Overnight Petra
After breakfast, there is a full-day tour of the ancient city of Petra, which was built by the Arab Nabateans who hewed their monumental tombs, palaces, treasury, theatre and other buildings from the desert sandstone in its natural colours of rose and gold. The Nabateans absorbed outside cultural influences from Graeco-Roman to Egyptian to Mesopotamian and combined them with their own ideas. You will see evidence of this in Petra. You approach the city through the long-winding Siq which is the main entrance to Petra. This fissure between two massive cliffs is 1200m long and is a deep and narrow gorge of stunning natural beauty. You emerge dramatically at the famous Treasury which has to be seen to be believed. There is an optional lunch at a restaurant in Petra. You return to your hotel in Petra for overnight.
Following breakfast you check out of the hotel and drive to the Wadi Rum desert where you have a 2 hour Bedouin 4x4 jeep tour of this desert - the backdrop for the filming of Lawrence of Arabia and acclaimed by many as one of the most stunning desert-scapes in the world. Also known as the Valley of the Moon, the mountains of sandstone and granite reach heights of over 1,700m with narrow canyons deep into the mountains. Lawrence described it as vast and echoing. Optional lunch. Return to Petra for overnight, dinner, bed & breakfast.
After breakfast, you will travel along the Kings Highway, to Amman, which is both the modern and ancient capital of the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan and although it originally covered 7 hills, it now spreads over 19. There you check in at the 4 star Zamzam Towers or Arena Space, or similar, on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis. Overnight Amman.
Today there is a full day tour of the Roman city of Jerash (known as the Pompeii of the East), which is the best preserved Roman city in existence. Jerash is nestled amid lush and undulating hills, which in ancient times were covered in thick pine, oak and pistachio forests. You will be transported back 2,000 years as you enter the city through the South Gate and walk in the Oval Plaza. To mention but a few of the sights are the street of columns, the huge and lavish Nymphaeum (an ornamental fountain dedicated to the dancing, singing water nymphs) and the Temple of Zeus which was built in 162 CE. There will also be a tour of Amman visiting the Citadel and Roman amphi-theatre seating 6,000 people. Optional lunch. Later you will be transferred to Amman Queen Alia Airport for your flight to Cairo.
